從此之后，大理寺正式變成負責復核案件、平反冤獄的司法機關。明代的「三法司會審」制度也進一步完善：唐朝的御史臺變成了都察院，刑部、都察院主要負責初審案件，大理寺主要負責復審案件。十分重大復雜的案件，則在三法司的基礎上會同六部尚書與通政使司共同會審，謂之「圓審」，也稱「九卿會審」。
